The Convention on Biological Diversity imposes few obligations upon the Contracting Parties that apply to areas beyond national jurisdiction, because its provisions do not apply to components of biological diversity (habitats and ecosystems, species and communities of species and genetic material) in those areas.
17 - وتفرض اتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي عددا قليلا من الالتزامات على الأطراف المتعاقدة، تسري على المناطق الواقعة خارج نطاق الولاية الوطنية، وذلك لأن أحكامها لا تسري على عناصر التنوع البيولوجي (الموائل والنظم الإيكولوجية، والأنواع ومجتمعات الأنواع، والمادة الجينية) في تلك المناطق.

Sustainable forest management should ensure that components of biological diversity are used in a way and at a rate that does not lead to the long-term decline of biological diversity, thereby maintaining its potential to meet the needs of present and future generations (Convention on Biological Diversity, article 2).
وينبغي أن تضمن اﻹدارة المستدامة للغابات استخدام عناصر التنوع البيولوجي بمعدل لا يؤدي إلى تناقصه في اﻷجل الطويل، ليصون له بذلك إمكانياته لتلبية احتياجات اﻷجيال الحالية والمقبلة )اتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي، المادة ٢(.

257. The Convention defines " sustainable use " as " the use of components of biological diversity in a way and at a rate that does not lead to the long-term decline of biological diversity, thereby maintaining its potential to meet the needs and aspirations of present and future generations " .
257 - وتُعرّف الاتفاقية " الاستخدام المستدام " بأنه " استخدام عناصر التنوع البيولوجي بأسلوب ومعدل لا يؤديان على المدى البعيد إلى تناقص هذا التنوع، ومن ثم صيانة قدرته على تلبية احتياجات وتطلعات الأجيال المقبلة " .

309. The Conference agreed to: (a) promote ecosystem approaches to the sustainable use of marine and coastal living resources, including the identification of key variables or interactions, for the purpose of assessing and monitoring components of biological diversity, the sustainable use of such components and ecosystems effects; and (b) make available to the parties information on marine and coastal genetic resources, including bioprospecting.

6/ The indicative list is quite extensive and covers (a) technologies and know-how relevant to the identification, characterization and monitoring of ecosystems, species and genetic resources, (b) technologies appropriate for the in situ and ex situ conservation of components of biological diversity and (c) technologies for the sustainable use of biological diversity.
