On 7 December 1998, the General Assembly adopted resolution 53/91 in which, inter alia, it took note of the report of the Secretary-General on cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of African Unity (OAU) (A/53/419) and requested the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly at its fifty-fourth session on the development of cooperation between the OAU and the organizations of the United Nations system.

Those are two major issues for consideration and action; they are also promising areas for cooperation between the OAU and the United Nations, and I shall therefore make some further comments on them.
