Mrs. ZACHARIAH (Malaysia) agreed with the Coordinator for the International Year of the World's Indigenous People, whose final report had been issued as document A/49/446, that a 12-month period was insufficient to hope to significantly improve the situation of indigenous communities, particularly given the modest resources available.

Moreover, as mentioned in the report of the Secretary-General (A/48/293), further in-kind contributions had been offered by a number of Austrian citizens and private-sector companies. The report also highlighted the remarkable work done by the Coordinator for the International Year of the Family and his staff despite almost insurmountable budgetary constraints.
