The Workshop began with presentations on the legal framework for deep seabed polymetallic nodule exploration and the Authority's regulations and recommendations to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment from harmful effects that may arise from activities in the Area.

1. The aim of these recommendations is to define the biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanographic information required to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment from harmful effects which may arise from activities in the Area.

In relation to the benthic ecosystem, the International Seabed Authority is in the process of establishing a framework to manage successfully threats to the marine environment and its biodiversity from activities in the Area, through its regulations on prospecting and exploration.
