1. The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, in collaboration with Harald Brakke and Galo Carrera, co-coordinators, is in the process of drafting a training manual on the preparation of a submission to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf under article 76 of and Annex II to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Meeting had expressed general support for the concerns raised and decided to include in the agenda for the eleventh Meeting the item " Issues with respect to article 4 of annex II to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea " .

Pursuant to article 2, paragraph 1, of annex II to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf shall consist of 21 members who shall be experts in the field of geology, geophysics or hydrography, elected by States Parties to the Convention from among their nationals.

In accordance with article 2, paragraph 2, of annex II to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Secretary-General addressed a communication dated 27 February 2014 to States parties to the Convention informing them of a vacancy in the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf owing to the resignation of Mr. Rajan Sivaramakrishnan (India) on 23 February 2014.

The Meeting of States parties decided to include on the agenda for the Eleventh Meeting (14-18 May 2001), an item entitled " Issues with respect to article 4 of Annex II to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea " and requested the Secretariat to prepare a background paper for that discussion (SPLOS/60, para. 62) (see para. 29).

19. The Commission took note of the " Decision regarding the date of commencement of the ten-year period for making submissions to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf set out in article 4 of Annex II to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea " , which was adopted by the Eleventh Meeting of States Parties on 18 May 2001 (SPLOS/72).
