In that context I would like to inform you of the results of an international symposium on the role of Judges in the Promotion and Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, held in Vienna on 24 November 2003.

The Symposium adopted the " Vienna Declaration on the Role of Judges in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms " , which contained specific recommendations for Governments and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as concrete proposals with regard to conflict and post-conflict situations.

The objective of the symposium was to draw attention to the needs of judges for support as regards their independence, impartiality, competence and integrity, and to facilitate a more effective and better coordinated approach by all relevant international actors inside and outside the United Nations system in assisting countries in their efforts to strengthen the role of Judges in the Promotion and Protection of human rights.
وكان الهدف من عقد الندوة لفت الانتباه إلى احتياج القضاة إلى الدعم فيما يتعلق باستقلالهم وحيادهم وكفاءتهم ونزاهتهم، وتيسير تبني كافة الجهات الدولية الفاعلة، في منظومة الأمم المتحدة وخارجها، لنهج أكثر فعالية وأفضل تنسيقا في مساعدة البلدان فيما تبذله من جهود لتدعيم دور القضاة في تعزيز وحماية حقوق الإنسان.
