Under rule 39 of its provisional rules of procedure, the Council extended invitations to Dmitry Titov, Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and Frank Majoor, Chairman of the Sierra Leone Configuration of the Peacebuilding Commission and Permanent Representative of the Netherlands.

It was informed that the functions of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Rule of Law Unit in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General and the Office of Legal Affairs in this area were distinct but mutually supportive in both their rationale and their main responsibilities.

On 7 May, the Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Dmitry Titov, briefed the Security Council on the situation in Sierra Leone, the work of the United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone and the mandate for the proposed successor office, the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL).
