32. With reference to the recommendations contained in the report of the Meeting of Eminent Persons on Commodity Issues, UNCTAD XI launched the idea of a global partnership in the form of an international task force on commodities.

To this end, the establishment of an international task force on Commodities was announced at UNCTAD XI. As explained in the annex to document TD/410, the Task Force will function in an informal and flexible manner, with partners cooperating in a spirit of cooperative endeavour.

In this context, the launching of an international task force on commodities at UNCTAD XI is particularly significant. At the national level, developing country Governments have to provide an enabling environment and the private sector has to take steps to improve competitiveness.
