20. However, the newest and most alarming aspect of the rise of parties with racist and xenophobic platforms is the insidious way in which these platforms have found their way into the political agendas of democratic parties.

The Special Rapporteur wishes to stress that the newest and most alarming aspect of the resurgence of parties and groups with racist and xenophobic platforms is their insidious inroads on the political agendas of democratic parties and their acceptance by the latter in order to win votes under the guise of combating terrorism, defending the " national identity " , promoting " national preference " and combating illegal immigration.

At the political level, the principal factor stems from the trivialization of racism and xenophobia through the political and electoral exploitation of racism and xenophobia, which is reflected in the pervasiveness of racist and xenophobic platforms in the political programmes of democratic parties and by governmental alliances that enable parties that promote such platforms to implement them with the necessary democratic legitimacy.

The General Assembly is invited to draw the attention of Member States to the alarming signs of a retreat in the struggle against racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia as a result of two serious developments: the growing acceptance of racism and xenophobia through the impact of racist and xenophobic platforms in the political programmes of democratic parties and the rise in racist political violence.

In his current report, he highlighted the need to prevent acceptance of racism and discrimination as a result of the inclusion of racist and xenophobic political platforms in the programmes of democratic parties under the guise of combating terrorism and illegal immigration (A/60/283, para. 6 (e)).

In his conclusions and recommendations, the Special Rapporteur underscores the importance of strong manifestations of political will and strict ethical standards not only for combating the influence of racist and xenophobic platforms on the political agendas of democratic parties, but also for ensuring that these parties cannot gain democratic legitimacy by joining government coalitions.

This politicization is an expression of one disturbing reason for the resilience and increase of racism and xenophobia: the existence of political parties with racist and xenophobic platforms that acquire a democratic legitimacy and the ability to implement these platforms as a result of electoral success and the infiltration of such platforms into the programmes of democratic parties.
