The Programme of Action also urges countries to recognize that the lands of indigenous people and their communities should be protected from activities that are environmentally unsound or activities that the indigenous people concerned consider to be socially and culturally inappropriate; there is a continuing need for effective steps to ensure such protection.
كما يحث برنامج العمل البلدان على التسليم بضرورة حماية أراضي السكان اﻷصليين ومجتمعاتهم المحلية من اﻷنشطة غير السليمة بيئيا أو اﻷنشطة التي يرى السكان اﻷصليون المعنيون أنها غير ملائمة اجتماعيا وثقافيا؛ وهناك حاجة مستمرة إلى خطوات فعالة لضمان هذه الحماية.

In view of the interrelationship between the natural environment and its sustainable development and the cultural, social, economic and physical well-being of indigenous people, national and international efforts to implement environmentally sound and sustainable development should recognize, accommodate, promote and strengthen the role of indigenous people and their communities.

11. The Earth Summit held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro adopted Agenda 21, the Programme of Action for Sustainable Development. The figure 21 refers to the twenty-first century. Chapter 26 of the Agenda is entitled " Recognizing and strengthening the role of indigenous people and their communities " .

(c) Involvement of indigenous people and their communities at the national and local levels in resource management and conservation strategies and other relevant programmes established to support and review sustainable development strategies, such as those suggested in other programme areas of Agenda 21.

The importance of traditional knowledge was recognized in the " Forest Principles " 6 and chapters 11 (Combating deforestation) and 26 (Recognizing and strengthening the role of indigenous people and their communities) of Agenda 21 adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992.
