The Sudan has three legally regulated armed forces: the Sudanese Armed Forces are the regular Government military and currently operate throughout the country; the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is the regular military force of the Government of Southern Sudan; and, the Popular Defence Force is an armed force linked to the ruling party of Northern Sudan and to armed groups raised from rural ethnic groups.
