74. The Unit is grateful to the States Members of the United Nations for requesting its views on such a topical and pertinent issue as strengthening and improving the effectiveness of the external oversight mechanisms.

In its overall consideration of the external oversight mechanisms, the Committee must view CPC as the main intergovernmental body responsible for programming, planning and coordination and assign it greater responsibility for reviewing and adapting the medium-term plan, in particular in the light of the plan's new format.

The CHAIRMAN said that, with regard to the question of the strengthening of oversight bodies, in resolution 50/214, section III, paragraph 2, the General Assembly had decided to consider at its resumed fiftieth session the modalities of the strengthening of the external oversight mechanisms decided upon in decision 47/454 of 23 December 1992.

Mr. ABRASZEWSKI (Chairman, Joint Inspection Unit), introducing the report of the Joint Inspection Unit (A/49/34), said that he wished to refer first to the question of strengthening and improving the effectiveness of the external oversight mechanisms.
٢٩ - السيد أبرازيفسكي )رئيس وحدة التفتيش المشتركة( عرض تقرير وحدة التفتيش المشتركة (A/49/34) فقال إنه يود أن يشير في البداية الى مسألة تعزيز وتحين فعالية آليات المراقبة الخارجية.

7. It may also be recalled that the General Assembly, in paragraph (b) of its decision 47/454, requested the views of JIU and three other oversight bodies on measures for improving the effectiveness and possible strengthening of the external oversight mechanisms.

26. During the current session, attention should be focused on strengthening external oversight mechanisms, pursuant to General Assembly decision 47/454 and a number of resolutions, including resolution 48/218 B. Priority should be accorded to strengthening the role, working methods and functioning of the external oversight mechanisms and providing them with the necessary human and financial resources to that end.
