Nearly one decade later the continuing discussions on ageing resulted also in the adoption of the United Nations Principles for Older Persons, and soon thereafter of the global targets on ageing for the year 2001.

Although no special procedure for monitoring the implementation of the United Nations Principles for Older Persons has been outlined, specific inquiries have been made, starting with the third review and appraisal of the Plan of Action, in 1992, regarding Governments’ promulgation of the Principles and adoption of related legislation on the rights of older persons.

(l) Within the context of the United Nations Principles for Older Persons 21/ and the global targets on ageing for the year 2001, 22/ reviewing or developing strategies for implementing the International Plan of Action on Ageing 23/ so that older persons can maximize their contribution to society and play their full part in the community;
