44. The Secretary-General of the Authority recalled that 14 plans of work for exploration in the Area had been approved, 5 in 2012, and six pending applications had been received thus far in 2013, representing a significant increase in the work of the Authority.

31. The events that led to the request are as follows: On 10 April 2008, the Authority received two applications for approval of a plan of work for exploration in the areas reserved for the conduct of activities by the Authority through the enterprise or in association with developing States pursuant to annex III, article 8, to the Convention.

23. Effectively, the Commission had received in 2008 two applications for approval of a plan of work for exploration in reserved areas; one from Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (sponsored by Nauru) and another from Tonga Offshore Mining Limited (sponsored by Tonga).

(sponsored by Nauru) and by Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd. (sponsored by Tonga), respectively. Both applicants are incorporated subsidiaries of Nautilus Minerals Inc. The Commission is expected to continue its considerations of these applications.
