II. General overview of the status of discussions on forest research of the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests

III. Status of reporting to the Forum: 2002-2010 7. From 2002 to 2005, the Forum invited Member States to submit voluntary national reports on progress made in implementing the proposals for action made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests for the corresponding sessions of the United Nations Forum on Forests.

The present fourth progress report highlights the Partnership's support provided to the work of the United Nations Forum on Forests, in particular its joint initiatives to help countries implement the proposals for action of the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests; assesses the work that it has carried out to date; and identifies potential opportunities for increased collaboration in the future.

In addition, the Council decided that the Forum would initially meet annually, that it could recommend the convening of ad hoc expert groups and that it would have high-level ministerial segments and multi-stakeholder policy dialogues similar to those in the Commission on Sustainable Development, the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests.

Decides that opportunities for participation of major groups, as identified by Agenda 21, should be facilitated at each session under the rules of procedure of the functional commissions of the Economic and Social Council, building upon the transparent and participatory practices established by the Commission on Social Development, the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests and the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests;
