Following this first mission, the Special Rapporteur also submitted an oral presentation on the human rights situation in Burundi to the Third Committee of the General Assembly in New York on 5 November 1999.

At its fifty-seventh session, in 2001, the Commission on Human Rights decided to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur for one year and requested her to submit an interim report on the human rights situation in Burundi to the General Assembly at its fifty-sixth session and to the Commission at its fifty-eighth session.

By decision 2002/246, having approved the decision of the Commission on Human Rights in its resolution 2002/12 to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur by one year, the Council approved the request to the Special Rapporteur to submit an interim report on the human rights situation in Burundi to the General Assembly at its fifty-seventh session.

At the time of his visit, the political situation was unstable owing to divisions within the ruling party, which had had an impact on the human rights situation in Burundi.

16. The efforts made by the various parties that have led to peace have had a positive impact on the human rights situation in Burundi.

1. By its resolution 2001/21, adopted on 20 April 2001, the Commission on Human Rights extended the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Burundi and maintained its agenda-specific dimension.
