The present report constitutes a review of the work and activities of the first Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context, Miloon Kothari, since his appointment in 2000.

1. The present report of the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context, is submitted pursuant to Human Rights Council resolutions 15/8 and 25/17.

1. Acknowledges the work undertaken by the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context, as well as the advancing of the conceptual understanding of the right to adequate housing;
1- ينوه بالعمل الذي اضطلع به المقرر الخاص المعني بالسكن اللائق كعنصر من العناصر المكونة للحق في مستوى معيشي مناسب وبالحق في عدم التمييز في هذا السياق، وكذلك بالتقدم المحرز في إدراك مفهوم الحق في السكن اللائق؛

1. In December 2007, by its resolution 6/27, the Human Rights Council reviewed and renewed the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context.

16. Also at the 27th meeting, the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context made a presentation and engaged in a dialogue with the representatives of Chile, Norway, Brazil, Malaysia, Algeria, Indonesia, Germany, Switzerland and the European Union.

Ms. Rolnik (Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context) said that her report mentioned several housing-related initiatives that had been taken at the local level to fight stereotyping and promote integration.

Ms. Rolnik (Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context) explained that on her visits to the field, she had been struck by the extremely poor housing conditions in which migrants had to live.

Ms. Rolnik (Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context), introducing her report (A/64/255), emphasized that climate change had already seriously affected the lives of some individuals and their ability to enjoy their fundamental rights.

The purpose of the mission to South Africa of the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context, Miloon Kothari, was to examine the status of realization of adequate housing, with particular attention to relevant programmes and policies to protect human rights relating to his mandate.

Also at the same meeting, the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to nondiscrimination in this context, made an introductory statement and responded to questions and comments made by the representatives of Brazil, Angola, the European Union, Maldives, the United States, South Africa, Germany and Indonesia (see A/C.3/68/SR.27).
