104. Within the framework of this initiative, the former President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, in his capacity as leader of the Greek Cypriot Community, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash, took part in five rounds of proximity talks as follows:

4. From 18 to 22 March 1998, my Special Adviser visited the island, where he held separate meetings with Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash in an effort to facilitate the resumption of direct talks between them.

15. As I reported to the Council last December (see S/2000/1138), I had invited Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash to attend proximity talks in Geneva in late January.

14. In response to my invitation, Glafcos Clerides and Rauf Denktash agreed to start proximity talks in New York on 3 December 1999 in order to prepare the ground for meaningful negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement.

15. On 14 November 1999, in response to my invitation, both Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash agreed to start proximity talks in New York on 3 December 1999 in order to prepare the ground for meaningful negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement.

In particular, on 11 November 2002, following nine months of direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in the presence of the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, the Secretary-General transmitted to Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash a document intended to provide a basis for an agreement on a comprehensive settlement.

Moreover, on 14 January 2003, more than 50,000 Turkish Cypriots took to the streets of occupied Nicosia, for the second time in 20 days, demonstrating in favour of a solution to the Cyprus problem and accession to the European Union, and urging Mr. Rauf Denktash to negotiate on the basis of the revised plan, with a view to reaching a solution by 28 February.

This TC new leadership did not replace Mr. Rauf Denktash, who was present in New York (10-13 February) and during all talks until 22 March 2004 appeared as " leader " .
