13. The participants outlined following principles and priorities for the cooperation between the UN and the African regional organizations in the field of peace and security:

The UN should exercise this responsibility with deliberateness, working closely with the peace and security councils of the African regional organizations.

In many areas, Africa has made substantial progress: the continent is experiencing strong economic growth; several crises are currently being resolved, for example those in Burundi, Liberia and Sierra Leone; the construction of the African Union is proceeding apace and the African regional organizations have become crucial players in conflict prevention and resolution in Africa.
