This note identifies four key developments in the commodity economy that are set to change the commodity landscape and pose challenges for commodity-dependent developing countries.

The UNCTAD secretariat undertook a number of studies, technical cooperation activities and organized intergovernmental meetings (consensus - building) to promote international cooperation in utilizing trade and development opportunities and addressing challenges associated with the commodity economy.

The commodity problematique and agreed actions to address the key contemporary trade and development problems associated with the commodity economy were comprehensively considered at the twelfth session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XII). The outcome of the conference on commodity issues is summarized in the present report.
وقد نظر مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة للتجارة والتنمية (الأونكتاد) في دورته الثانية عشرة (الأونكتاد الثاني عشر) في إشكالية السلع الأساسية بصورة شاملة، ووافق على إجراء لمعالجة المشكلات الرئيسية المعاصرة التي تواجهها التجارة والتنمية والمرتبطة باقتصاد السلع الأساسية.

While some developing country exporters of primary commodities may derive benefit from this demand, the key realities of the commodity economy remain, namely, price volatility in the sector and limited development gains from their production and trade.

20. Although the current commodity boom has improved the situation of primary commodities in world trade and revived the potential role of commodity trade in contributing to sustained economic growth and poverty reduction in the globalized economy, key realities of the commodity economy remain.
