The Committee attached great importance to the issue of fostering sustainable development in the commodity field and agreed on areas requiring special attention in this respect It welcomed the participation of UNCTAD in the organization of the international conference on development, environment and mining and requested the secretariat to prepare a report on this conference for submission to the third session of the Committee.

38. The representative of Cuba said that commodity prices had declined to a level which did not allow developing countries to secure enough export earnings to meet their basic needs, and UNCTAD constituted the proper forum for finding appropriate solutions in the commodity field.
٨٣- وقال ممثل كوبا إن أسعار السلع اﻷساسية قد تدهورت إلى مستوى لا يسمح للبلدان النامية بضمان حصائل تصدير كافية لاشباع حاجاتها اﻷساسية وان اﻷونكتاد يشكل المحفل المناسب ﻹيجاد حلول ملائمة في ميدان السلع اﻷساسية.

The Standing Committee agreed that intergovernmental discussion and investigation of commodity issues to promote sound, compatible and consistent policies in the commodity field is both necessary and valuable, especially as these commodity issues affect the situation of particular commodities which dominate the economies of the least developed countries.
٢١- واتفقت اللجنة الدائمة على أن مسألة اجراء مناقشات حكومية دولية وبحث قضايا السلع اﻷساسية من أجل تعزيز السياسات السليمة والمتوافقة والمتسقة في ميدان السلع اﻷساسية هي أمر ضروري وقيّم على السواء، خاصة وأن قضايا السلع اﻷساسية هذه تؤثر في وضع سلع معينة تهيمن على اقتصادات أقل البلدان نمواً.

In 1993, the Standing Committee on Commodities discussed " Experiences concerning environmental effects of commodity production and processing " within the context of " fostering sustainable development in the commodity field " .
وفي عام ١٩٩٣، ناقشت اللجنة الدائمة للسلع اﻷساسية " الخبرات المتعلقة بآثار إنتاج وتجهيز السلع اﻷساسية على البيئة " وذلك في سياق " تعزيز التنمية المستدامة في ميدان السلع اﻷساسية " .

NGOs in status include development-related NGOs, global umbrella NGOs representing a wide range of national and international member organizations, chambers of commerce, trade unions and specialized non-governmental bodies in specific sectors such as trade, sustainable development, transport, banking, insurance, environment as well as professional associations working in the commodity field.
