The Secretary-General addressed a letter to the President of the Security Council (S/2004/461) on 7 June informing members of the Council that following his meeting on 19 January 2004 with the Governing Council of Iraq and the Coalition Provisional Authority, he had responded positively to their request for United Nations assistance in Iraq's political transition process.
