At its fifty-second session, the United Nations General Assembly, in resolution 52/198 of 18 December 1997, approved the institutional linkage between the secretariat and the United Nations, in accordance with the offer of the Secretary-General and as accepted by the Conference of the Parties.

The present note provides a brief report on the institutional linkage of the Convention secretariat to the United Nations and how it has worked out in practice.
