The ongoing reorganization of the Department of Public Information should result in a reorientation of the United Nations information and communications policies according to clearly defined goals that should then become central to the strategic management of the Organization as a whole.

All speakers welcomed Mr. Kensaku Hogen as head of the Department of Public Information and pointed to the fact that his appointment at the level of Under-Secretary-General signified the importance attached to placing the information and communications function at the heart of the strategic management of the Organization and to developing a culture of communication.
