The United Nations Population Fund was established in 1967 as a trust fund (later named the United Nations Fund for Population Activities) by the Secretary-General in response to Council resolution 1084 (XXXIX) of 30 July 1965 and General Assembly resolution 2211 (XXI) of 17 December 1966 calling for an expanded programme of action in the field of population.
