It is recalled in this connection that in its 1998 report on the United Nations system common services, which was endorsed by the General Assembly, JIU recommended the progressive establishment over a ten-year period (2000-2010) of three common service centres at Geneva (UNOG, ILO/WHO and ITU/WIPO/WMO).

The Chairman recalled that the report of the Secretary-General on the question of common services at Geneva (A/56/417) had been introduced and discussed in the context of the Committee's consideration of the report of the Joint Inspection Unit on the United Nations system common services at Geneva (A/55/856 and Add.1).

23. After examining the report of the Unit on the United Nations system common services at Geneva, part II (A/55/856/Add.1), the General Assembly, in its resolution 56/279, requested the Unit to continue monitoring progress in the development and consolidation of common services at Geneva and other duty stations, and to report thereon at its fifty-eighth session in the context of this annual report.
