67. The objectives of preparing a new version of the World Atlas of Desertification have to be determined clearly before the revision work starts.

1. During the first meeting of the Group of Experts (GoE) of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST), held in Hamburg, Germany, in 2002, the task to evaluate guidelines to update the World Atlas of Desertification was clearly outlined.
1- حُدِّدت بوضوح مهمة تقييم مبادئ توجيهية لتحديث الأطلس العالمي للتصحر في أثناء الاجتماع الأول لفريق الخبراء التابع للجنة العلم والتكنولوجيا المعقود بهامبورغ، ألمانيا، في عام 2002.

THEMANET could be the most important forum to all those who are interested and involved in the fight against desertification and drought, complementing the World Atlas of Desertification.
وقد يكون موقع THEMANET أهم منتدى بالنسبة للمهتمين بمكافحة التصحر والجفاف والمشاركين في مكافحتهما، ليكمل بذلك الأطلس العالمي للتصحر.

66. Referring to the detailed explanations given above, the following is a thematically ordered summary of conclusions and recommendations. They may be taken into consideration in the forthcoming updating or revision of the World Atlas of Desertification.
66- إشارةً إلى التوضيحات المفصلة أعلاه، يرد أدناه ملخص منسق موضوعياً بالاستنتاجات والتوصيات التي يمكن مراعاتها في تحديث الأطلس العالمي للتصحر أو تنقيحه في المستقبل القريب.

Report and proposal on the evaluation of guidelines to update the World Atlas of Desertification (ICCD/COP(8)/CST/2/Add.9);

22. This ratio, called an aridity index (AI), has been adopted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the World Atlas of Desertification to define the following classification of climatic zones:
22- وهذه النسبة، التي تُسمى مؤشر الجفاف، قد اعتمدها برنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة في الأطلس العالمي للتصحر لتحديد التصنيف التالي للمناطق المناخية:

the World Atlas of Desertification, edited by UNEP in 1997, is an important and considerable trial to summarize global information on the process of desertification and land degradation in the drylands, to present an overview on these lands, and to draw attention of all people and governments in the world to the problems accompanying with desertification.
إن الأطلس العالمي للتصحر، الذي نشره برنامج البيئة في عام 1997، هو محاولة مهمة وكبيرة لتلخيص ما يتوفر من معلومات على الصعيد العالمي عن عملية التصحر وتدهور الأراضي في الأراضي الجافة ولتقديم عرض عام عن هذه الأراضي وللفت نظر كافة الشعوب والحكومات في العالم إلى المشاكل التي ترافق التصحر.

The objectives of compilation and constructing a new edition of the World Atlas have to be determined clearly before the revision work will start.
(ب) وينبغي تحديد أهداف تصنيف وإعداد طبعة جديدة من الأطلس العالمي تحديداً واضحاً قبل البدء بأعمال التنقيح.

All the above-mentioned preliminaries strengthen the importance of a project to update the World Atlas of Desertification.
وتؤكد جميع العمليات التمهيدية المذكورة أعلاه أهمية مشروع تحديث أطلس العالم في مجال التصحر.
