22. Mr. Tiendrébéogo (Burkina Faso) said the precarious position of countries in special situations had been exacerbated by the many crises faced by the world in recent years.

Mr. Tiendrébéogo (Burkina Faso) (spoke in French): Mr. President, my delegation would like to thank you for agreeing to convene this emergency special session to allow all States Members of the United Nations to speak on the grave crisis that has been affecting the Middle East for three weeks now.

Mr. Tiendrébéogo (Burkina Faso) said that the signing of the joint communiqué on 2 April 2009 reflected the Sierra Leonean Government's steadfast efforts to bring about sustainable peace and reconciliation and he welcomed the financial support provided for its implementation from the emergency window of the Peacebuilding Fund.

Mr. Tiendrébéogo (Burkina Faso) (spoke in French): Among the challenges that the international community must address in the area of peace and security is the issue of conventional weapons, in particular small arms and light weapons, the unimpeded movement of which is a serious threat to peace and security in many regions of the world, especially in Africa.

59. Ms. Tiendrébéogo/Sanon (Burkina Faso) said that the situation of children in Burkina Faso had improved, but much remained to be done: school enrolment rates had increased, but 39.3 per cent of children still did not have access to education in 2006.

On 17 April 2000, the Special Rapporteur, together with the Chairman-Rapporteur of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Special Rapporteur on torture, transmitted an urgent appeal to the Government concerning the arrest of Halidou Ouédraogo, Tolé Sagnon, Norbert Tiendrébéogo and Bénéwendé Sankara on 13 April 2000, as well as the arrest of Pierre Bidima and Etienne Traoré, along with 33 other people, on 10 April 2000.
