Under the Chairman's guidance, and with the active participation of all members, I am confident that the Department will be steered in the right direction, one which will permit it to achieve the mandate for which it was created in 1946 by General Assembly resolution 13 (I), to promote to the greatest possible extent an informed understanding of the work and purposes of the United Nations among the peoples of the world.
