In line with the Vienna Declaration (para. 38), this Platform stresses the importance of working towards the elimination of violence against women in public and private life, the elimination of gender bias in the administration of justice and eradication of any conflicts which may arise between the rights of women and the harmful effects of certain traditional or customary practices, cultural prejudices and religious extremism and armed conflict.

The present initial report provides a brief background on the activities of UNIFEM towards the elimination of violence against women and communicates to the Commission on the Status of Women and the Commission on Human Rights the intention of the Administrator of UNDP to initiate the necessary consultations as requested by the General Assembly in its resolution 50/166.

The anniversary coincided with the five-year review of the implementation of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, the policy document with recommendations produced by the World Conference on Human Rights3 and its historic recognition of women’s rights as human rights and of the need to work towards the elimination of violence against women.

While international organizations clearly have direct obligations not to commit or contribute to acts of violence against women through their programming or funding decisions, they also have additional duties to cooperate and to establish coherent inter-agency strategies to work towards the elimination of violence against women in close collaboration with local communities and relevant civil society groups.
وتقع على المنظمات الدولية التزامات مباشرة بعدم ارتكاب أفعال العنف ضد المرأة أو المساهمة فيها من خلال قراراتها المتعلقة بوضع البرامج أو التمويل، إلا أنه يجب عليها كذلك أن تتعاون مع المجتمعات المحلية وهيئات المجتمع المدني ذات الصلة، وأن تضع بالتعاون الوثيق معها استراتيجيات مُحكمة مشتركة بين الوكالات للعمل من أجل القضاء على العنف ضد المرأة.

1. We, non-governmental organizations working towards the elimination of violence against women and the realization of gender equality, reaffirm the message in the Beijing Declaration, adopted by the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, that " violence against women is an obstacle to the achievement of the objectives of equality, development and peace " .
1 - نحن، المنظمات غير الحكومية العاملة من أجل القضاء على العنف ضد المرأة وتحقيق المساواة بين الجنسين، نؤكد مجددا الرسالة الواردة في إعلان بيجين، الذي اعتمده المؤتمر العالمي الرابع المعني بالمرأة في عام 1995، والتي جاء فيها " العنف ضد المرأة يمثل عقبة تحول دون تحقيق أهداف المساواة، والتنمية والسلام " .
