Many speakers supported the need to recognize the relationship between trade and human rights and to establish a more constructive dialogue on these two areas among respective international organizations, including an analysis of the impact of trade on the enjoyment and realization of human rights.

In the light of the increasing scrutiny of the relationship between trade and human rights in recent years, this publication explores one of several, namely the use of general exceptions clauses in world trade agreements as a vehicle to protect human rights, in particular on how three specific exceptions - allowing States to take measures to protect public morals, human life or health, and public order - could be relevant to human rights.

On 1 May 2008, members of the Committee participated in an informal consultation on the impact of international trade agreements on the enjoyment of economic, social and cultural rights with World Trade Organization (WTO) ambassadors, NGO representatives, as well as with OHCHR and WTO staff members, to further discuss potential areas of interaction between trade and human rights.

On 10 November 2008, members of the Committee participated in an informal consultation on trade and human rights to discuss the possibility of drafting a set of questions which might serve as a reference in the Committee's dialogue with States parties, with a view to assessing the extent to which trade and traderelated policies affect the enjoyment of economic, social and cultural rights.
وفي 10 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2008، شارك أعضاء اللجنة في مشاورة غير رسمية بشأن التجارة وحقوق الإنسان لمناقشة إمكانية وضع مجموعة من الأسئلة التي يمكن أن تستند إليها اللجنة في حوارها مع الدول الأطراف، بهدف تقييم مدى تأثير التجارة والسياسات المتصلة بالتجارة في التمتع بالحقوق الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية.
