The 6th ministerial meeting of the Arctic Council, held in Tromsø, Norway, on 29 April 2009, acknowledged that indigenous peoples in the Arctic were taking a leading role in using the best available traditional and scientific knowledge to help to understand and adapt to challenges related to climate change and other challenges in their societies, and welcomed initiatives to build the capacity of indigenous peoples.
