A number of delegations urged contractors to take into consideration the suggestions set forth in the recommendations for the guidance of contractors and sponsoring States relating to training programmes under plans of work for exploration, in order to provide for the training equivalent of at least 10 trainees during each five-year period of the contracts.

At present, recommendations have been issued in connection with the assessment of possible environmental impacts arising from exploration (ISBA/19/LTC/8), the reporting of financial expenditure under contracts for exploration (ISBA/15/LTC/7) and the implementation of training programmes under plans of work for exploration (ISBA/19/LTC/14).

1. The present recommendations are intended to provide guidance to applicants for plans of work for exploration, contractors and sponsoring States on their responsibilities with regard to training programmes under plans of work for exploration.

As a result, the Commission issued as an interim document a revised set of recommendations for the guidance of contractors and sponsoring States in relation to training programmes under plans of work for exploration (ISBA/19/LTC/14) with the aim of providing advice to contractors on the implementation of training obligations and assisting the Secretary-General in negotiations with contractors on the development of training programmes.
