To assist the national efforts to mark the day the Secretariat provided limited financial assistance of $2,500 to four developing countries - Burkina Faso, Montenegro, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the Syrian Arab Republic - to contribute towards organizing their national activities.

5. Ways and means by which the interim secretariat could assist Member States, upon their request, in organizing their national activities for the observance of the World Day are summarized below.

The Subcommittee noted that an increasing number of reports submitted by Member States on their national activities in outer space comprised a summary of those activities and did not exceed three pages, in accordance with the agreement of the Committee at its fifty-third session.

Some delegations expressed the view that, in order for States to continue having unrestricted access to outer space, all space-faring countries should take the lead and implement space debris mitigation practices in their national activities as expeditiously as possible.

The majority of countries (63 per cent) frequently used the meetings and their outcomes to promote change in their national drug/organized crime law enforcement practices and expressed the view that the meetings brought added value to their national activities.

It also recalled its invitation to Parties to submit to the secretariat, by 15 September 2008, additional information on their national activities with respect to implementing the plan, and encouraged Parties to use the guidelines mentioned in paragraph above when providing that information.
