323. During the period under review, 52 new cases of disappearance were transmitted by the Working Group to the Government of Yemen, one of which occurred in 1998 and was sent under the urgent action procedure.

14. The Chair of the Working Group subsequently carried out the tasks entrusted to her in the context of the conclusions, including by conveying a letter to the President of the Security Council requesting that the President transmit letters to the Government of Yemen and the Secretary-General, and by transmitting letters to the World Bank and donors.

In 1998, the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances received and transmitted to the Government of Yemen numerous cases of secret detentions and enforced disappearances in the context of counterterrorism operations in the country since the period between January and April 1986.

The Special Rapporteur transmitted, jointly with the Special Rapporteur on the question of torture and the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, an urgent appeal to the Government of Yemen concerning Abu al-Hassan al-Medhar, Ahmed Mohammad Ali Atif and Sa'ad Mohammad Atif who were reportedly arrested in connection with the kidnapping of 16 tourists, which led to an armed clash in which several persons were killed.
