From this rostrum, I should like to reiterate once again our profound appreciation to the United Nations system for supporting the process of coordinating and reinforcing the peace agreements in El Salvador.

2. As the members of the General Assembly will recall, I last submitted a report on the status of implementation of the peace accords in El Salvador on 23 April 1996 (A/50/935).

I. INTRODUCTION 1. As the General Assembly will recall, my predecessor submitted a report on the status of implementation of the peace accords in El Salvador on 25 November 1996 (A/51/693).

1. The present report is submitted pursuant to General Assembly resolution 50/226 of 10 May 1996, by which the Assembly decided, inter alia, to establish the United Nations Office of Verification in El Salvador, to follow up implementation of pending aspects of the peace accords in El Salvador through 31 December 1996 after the expiration of the mandate of the Mission of the United Nations in El Salvador (MINUSAL).

I am writing to inform you of progress in the implementation of the peace accords in El Salvador during the period from 1 July to 10 December 1997, in accordance with the request by the General Assembly contained in resolution 51/199 B of 31 July 1997 that I keep it informed of further developments in the implementation of the peace process in El Salvador, as I deem appropriate.

It also outlines the activities of the United Nations system in the region, in particular ongoing monitoring of the implementation of peace agreements in El Salvador and Guatemala.

Allow me to refer now to section V of the report of the Secretary-General, the specific part entitled " The United Nations in El Salvador " , in which there is an account of positive developments in the implementation and compliance with the El Salvador peace agreements in a difficult economic context stemming primarily from the negative effects of natural disasters and the current international economic environment.
