Welcoming the replies provided by Parties to the questionnaire circulated by the Secretariat concerning national classification and control procedures for the import of wastes contained in Annex IX,

The recent South Pacific Forum in Brisbane, Australia, among others, reaffirmed its support for the negotiation of a convention to ban the Importation into Forum island countries of hazardous wastes and to control their transboundary movement and management within the South Pacific region, and it welcomed the progress made in that regard.
إن محفل جنوب المحيط الهادئ في اجتماعه اﻷخير في بريسباني باستراليا، أكد من جديد، في جملة أمور، على دعمه التفاوض على اتفاقية تحظر استيراد النفايات الضارة إلى بلدان المحفل الجزرية وتحد نقل عبر الحدود والسيطرة عليها في منطقة جنوب المحيط الهادئ، وقد رحب بالتقدم المحرز في هذا الصدد.

At its meeting last month the South Pacific Forum adopted the Convention to Ban the Importation into Forum Island Countries of Hazardous and Radioactive Wastes and to Control the Transboundary Movement and Management of Hazardous Wastes within the South Pacific Region, also referred to as the Waigani Convention.
