The Urban Secretariat produces both the Global Report on Human Settlements and the State of the World's Cities report series and is now engaged with partners around the world to help them catalogue best practices, collect urban indicator data, including indicators for slums and urban poverty, and prepare state-of-the-city reports for local and national policy-making processes.

Since the seventeenth session of the Commission, the Centre has established a small unit on the special session within the Urban Secretariat, with the task of coordinating the Centre's activities in support of the preparatory process for the special session of the General Assembly.

The Urban Secretariat gave financial and substantive support to gender-focused parallel events at the special session. The most significant of which was the five-day Grassroots Women's International Academy (GWIA) with 200 participants. GWIA is an innovative peer learning process for grassroots women's organizations, first launched in 2000.
