Following the above-mentioned 1998 landmark report of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa, a flurry of United Nations initiatives of all kinds have been pursued.

Allow me also to thank the Secretary-General for the two reports before us, on progress in implementation and international support for the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), and on implementation of the recommendations contained in the report of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa.

Eighty-two per cent of the recommendations proposed in the reports of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa and on progress in the implementation of NEPAD were supported by the General Assembly, representing an increase in support for Africa's development.

The Egyptian delegation wishes to stress once again the special importance of the annual report of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict in Africa, which has previously included a consolidated and unique view of the achievements made and the threats and challenges facing the realization of peace and security on the continent.
ويود وفد مصر مجددا التأكيد على الأهمية الخاصة للتقرير السنوي الذي يقدمه الأمين العام بشأن أسباب النزاعات في أفريقيا، الذي تضمن في السابق رؤية مجمعة وفريدة للإنجازات التي تحققت وللتحديات والتهديدات التي ما زالت تواجه تحقيق الأمن والسلم في القارة.

4. During the four meetings held during its first session, the Working Group held a general exchange of views on how to monitor the implementation of the recommendations of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa.

With regard to the second item, which pertains to the recommendations contained in the report of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of sustainable development in Africa (A/58/352), my delegation associates itself with the assessment of the Secretary-General himself, who says that " progress has been slow and uneven " .
أما بالنسبة إلى البند الثاني، الذي يتعلق بالتوصيات الواردة في تقرير الأمين العام بشأن أسباب الصراع وتعزيز السلام الدائم والتنمية المستدامة في أفريقيا (A/58/352)، فإن وفدي يؤيد تقييم الأمين العام، الـذي يقول " إن التقدم المحـرز كان بطيئا وغير متسق " .

3. When the report of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa was first issued in 1998, 14 countries in the region had experienced armed conflict or civil strife, 11 were under severe political crisis and turbulence and only the remaining 15 enjoyed more or less stable political conditions.
3 - عندما صدر تقرير الأمين العام بشأن أسباب الصراع في أفريقيا وتعزيز السلم الدائم والتنمية المستدامة فيها للمرة الأولى في عام 1998، كان هناك 14 بلدا من بلدان المنطقة يدور فيه صراع مسلح أو حرب أهلية، و 11 بلد يمر بأزمة سياسية شديدة وباضطرا بات ولم يكن يتمتع بظروف سياسية مستقرة نوعا ما سوى البلدان الـ 15 المتبقية.

Africa's Development On average, 93 per cent (compared to 82 per cent in 2004-2005) of the recommendations of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa and on progress in the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) were endorsed by the General Assembly, showing increased support for Africa's development.
