The report focuses on major new initiatives or activities that are being carried out through inter-agency coordination and cooperation and aims to serve as a strategic tool for United Nations entities to further enhance inter-agency cooperation.

From the two decades reviewed above, and on the basis of the experience of the first United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty, one important lesson that emerges is that a dedicated inter-agency mechanism is required to develop, support and monitor the activities that are being implemented and to fully support national ownership of the Second Decade.

With this document and his earlier report to the Millennium Summit, we have a comprehensive view of the ongoing activities of the United Nations and the possible actions that Members could initiate towards implementing the goals of the Charter. In the interest of brevity, my delegation would like to comment on only a few of the issues in the report.
