The meeting was preceded by an intergovernmental meeting of African experts in the field of human settlements which prepared the groundwork for the ministerial meeting. The outcome of the meeting was a declaration by the Ministers with respect to an African Common Position for the Habitat II Conference.

Furthermore, we applaud the collaboration between the OAU and the ECA in different areas, such as the preparation of a Common African position on human and social development in Africa and the holding of important regional conferences and seminars on topics of vital importance to Africa.

Any solution to this problem must take into account the joint African position on the issue and the particularly critical economic situation of Africa.
