This was a Caribbean Environment Programme partnership developed in conjunction with the International Coral Reef Action Network, and a collaborative effort aimed at confronting the decline of coral reef ecosystems and improving the economic and environmental sustainability of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef through capacity-building activities, the development of better practices, and building of partnerships with the private sector.

As a Co-Chair of the White Water to Blue Water Partnership Initiative, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP) continues to develop partnerships that enhance integrated approaches in areas such as waste water and sanitation, sustainable agricultural practices, integrated coastal management, sustainable tourism and environmentally sound marine transport in the wider Caribbean region.

In terms of coastal and marine conservation, the Caribbean Environment Programme continues to be an important mechanism for regional cooperation, working closely with the Cartagena Convention regional activity centre for specially protected areas and wildlife, in particular on the listing of protected areas under the Protocol to the Convention, conservation of marine mammals and support to marine protected areas.
