Upon finalization, the handbook will be published for distribution to farmers in dry zones in the affected Asian country Parties and will constitute one of the educational tools for capacity building.

The unit has also provided technical assistance to Asian country Parties for developing, formulating and validating NAPs for national implementation of the UNCCD, and has efficiently coordinated regional and subregional activities on the priority issues identified by the country Parties of the region.

In this context, the Asian country Parties and their partners appeal to the Asian Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank to increase their support to UNCCD implementation at the national, subregional and regional levels in Asia and to participate in the reporting process.

In accordance with the provisional agenda of the first session of the CRIC (ICCD/CRIC(1)/1), Asian country Parties nominated the following countries to present case studies at the session: Thematic topic

24. With regard to external support received by Asian country Parties with the formulation and/or alignment of their NAP to The Strategy, more than half of the country Parties that answered this question reported having not received external assistance.
24- فيما يتعلق بالدعم الخارجي الذي تلقته البلدان الأطراف الآسيوية لصياغة و/أو مواءمة برامج عملها الوطنية مع الاستراتيجية، أفاد ما يزيد على نصف عدد البلدان الأطراف التي ردت على هذا السؤال بأنها لم تحصل على مساعدة خارجية.

27. With regard to external support received by Asian country Parties with the formulation and/or alignment of their NAPs to The Strategy, more than half of the country Parties reported having received external assistance; one third reported no such assistance.

In August 1996, the Asian country Parties elaborated the regional action programme for combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought in Asia (RAP for Asia), which was adopted at the regional ministerial conference held in Beijing, China, in August 1996.

1. In conformity with article 4 of the terms of reference of the CRIC, as annexed to decision 1/COP.5, on the composition of the Bureau of the CRIC, the Asian country Parties nominated Mr. Khaled Al-Shara'a (Syrian Arab Republic) as the vice-chairperson of the CRIC.
