1. The nineteenth session of the Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination of the Statistical Commission was held in New York from 10 to 12 February 1998.

49. Essentially, this report attempts to deal with a few key questions asked in the course of the 1998 meeting of the Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination of the Statistical Commission:

Her delegation viewed with interest the recommendations of the Expert Group of the Statistical Commission on the Statistical Implications of Recent Major United Nations Conferences, to the effect that sets of national social data disaggregated by sex should be prepared in order to measure progress in implementation of the programmes of action of the conferences.
وذكرت أن وفدها يهتم بتوصيات فريق الخبراء التابع للجنة اﻹحصائية والمعنى باﻵثار اﻹحصائية لمؤتمر اﻷمم المتحدة الرئيسية اﻷخيرة بقصد إعداد مجموعات البيانات الاجتماعية الوطنية موزعة حسب نوع الجنس، بغية قياس التقدم المحرز في تنفيذ برامج عمل تلك المؤتمرات.

(d) Noted that UNSTAT would report to the Working Group of the Statistical Commission on the results of its efforts.

The agenda item entitled “United Nations Economic and Social Information System” was added to the provisional agenda for the present session of the Statistical Commission by the Commission’s Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination, which requested the present progress report.

5. In view of the above, ISWGNA presented a series of proposals to the Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination of the Statistical Commission for a continuous updating process that balances both the needs for streamlining and adequate consultation.

As requested by the Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination of the Statistical Commission at its meeting in February 1998, a draft of the revised Principles and Recommendations for a Vital Statistics System was prepared.

(c) Noted that the Task Force would report to the Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination of the Statistical Commission on improving coordination and developing targets and priorities.

The Expert Group had already established a work programme to be carried out by specified countries and organizations and would report to the Working Group of the Statistical Commission (see para. 10 above).

As decided by the Statistical Commission’s Working Group on International Statistical Programmes and Coordination at its nineteenth session (10–12 February 1998), an item regarding the proposed international institute for statistics was included on the agenda of the thirtieth session of the Statistical Commission, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was invited to prepare a report on it.

The Statistical Commission’s Working Group, when considering the report of the ad hoc group referred to above at its nineteenth session, requested the Secretariat to prepare a report on options for the meetings of the Statistical Commission and the Working Group (E/CN.3/1999/20, para. 35(d)); accordingly, such a report is also before the Commission.

20. At its eighteenth session, held in New York from 16 to 19 April 1996, the Working Group of the Statistical Commission considered the report and recommendations of the Expert Group on the Statistical Implications of Recent Major United Nations Conferences (E/CN.3/AC.1/1996/R.4) and agreed that the report should be considered by the Statistical Commission at its next session.

(c) The Working Group of the Statistical Committee meets once a year in February, prior to the session of the Statistical Commission, with the major objective of coordinating the regional position on issues to be discussed at the session of the Commission;
