While we hope for further support for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, my country welcomes the existence of nuclear-weapon-free zones on the basis of arrangements freely arrived at among the States of the region concerned, and we appeal for further consultations in order to create new such zones, for example in the Middle East, which continues to be a very sensitive region.
وبينما يحدونا الأمل في الحصول على دعم إضافي لمعاهدة الحظر الشامل للتجارب النووية، يرحب بلدي بإنشاء مناطق خالية من الأسلحة النووية على أساس الترتيبات التي يتم التوصل إليها بحرية فيما بين دول المنطقة المعنية، ونناشد عقد مشاورات إضافية بغية إنشاء مناطق جديدة، على سبيل المثال في الشرق الأوسط، الذي لا يزال منطقة حساسة جدا.

As an important model of cooperation and an effective confidence-building measure, we encourage and support the establishment of internationally recognized and effectively verifiable nuclear-weapon-free zones, on the basis of arrangements freely arrived at among States of the regions concerned and in accordance with the 1999 guidelines of the United Nations Disarmament Commission.
17 - وكنموذج مهم من نماذج التعاون وتدبير فعال من تدابير بناء الثقة، فإننا نشجع ونؤيد إنشاء المناطق الخالية من الأسلحة النووية المعترف بها دوليا والتي يمكن التحقق منها بصورة فعالة، على أساس الترتيبات التي يتم التوصل إليها بحرية بين دول المناطق المعنية ووفقا للمبادئ التوجيهية لهيئة الأمم المتحدة لنزع السلاح لعام 1999.

17- ونشجع وندعم إنشاء مناطق خالية من الأسلحة النووية معترف بها دولياً ويمكن التحقق منها بفعالية، استناداً إلى الترتيبات التي يتم التوصل إليها بحرية فيما بين بلدان المناطق المعنية ووفقاً للمبادئ التوجيهية الصادرة عن لجنة نزع الأسلحة النووية في عام 1999، ويشكل ذلك نموذجاً مهماً للتعاون وإجراءً فعالاً لبناء الثقة.

The African Group wishes formally to announce with satisfaction the entry into force on 15 July 2009 of the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Pelindaba, and hereby reiterates its support for the concept of internationally recognized nuclear-weapon-free zones established on the basis of arrangements freely arrived at among the States of the regions concerned.
