But before I give the floor to the speakers on my list for the plenary meeting today, I wish on behalf of the Conference on Disarmament and on my own behalf to warmly welcome a new colleague who has recently assumed the responsibilities of representing his Government in Geneva, Mr. Faysal Khabbaz Hamoui, Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic.
ولكن قبل أن أعطي الكلمة للمتكلمين على قائمتي للجلسة العامة اليوم، أود باسم المؤتمر وباسمي أن أرحب ترحيباً حاراً بزميل جديد اضطلع مؤخراً بالمسؤولية عن تمثيل حكومته في جنيف، هو السيد فيصل خباز الحموي سفير الجمهورية العربية السورية.

السيد الحموي (الجمهورية العربية السورية): سيدي الرئيس، أتقدم ببداية بياني بتهنئتكم على توليكم رئاسة المؤتمر وكذلك على نجاحكم في اعتماد جدول الأعمال ولنشاطكم الواضح في إدارة جلساتنا.

Mr. Hamoui (Syrian Arab Republic) (spoke in Arabic): I would have liked to make a general statement today on the activities of the Conference, what it achieved over the past year and what we hope it will achieve this year.
السيد الحموي (الجمهورية العربية السورية): كنت أتمنى أن أقدم اليوم بياناً شاملاً عن المؤتمر وما تحقق في السنة الماضية وما نأمل أن يتحقق في هذه السنة.

The PRESIDENT (spoke in French): I thank the representative of Brazil for his statement and for his kind words addressed to the presidency and I now call on the Syrian Ambassador, Mr. Hamoui.

Mr. Hamoui (Syrian Arab Republic) (spoke in Arabic): I have the honour to speak on behalf of the Group of 21. On behalf of the Group of 21 and on behalf of my own delegation, I should like to extend out deepest condolences to the distinguished delegations of China and Myanmar.

75. Mr. Kabbaz Hamoui (Syrian Arab Republic) said it was regrettable that the Canadian delegation had made spurious allegations about nuclear activities supposedly conducted in the Syrian Arab Republic.

In 2001, with the exception of cholera, measles, viral hepatitis and rabies, all of which showed no particular change, the incidence of infectious diseases continued to drop, and endemic diseases and parasitic illnesses have been basically brought under control.
