However, while legislation on intellectual property rights is well developed or in place in many developed countries and is under consideration in a few developing countries and some of the economies in transition, there are no international legal instruments or standards that adequately recognize the rights of indigenous and local communities and farmers over their knowledge, technologies and innovations.
