6. The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa was established in 1986.

At the Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, for example, the Week was observed in 1994 in a joint venture with the United Nations Information Centre in Lomé, by making a tour through the important towns of Togo.

We also urge the strengthening of existing structures, such as the Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa; the Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa at Lomé, in Togo; and the OAU's Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution.

Welcoming the activities carried out by the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, which have contributed substantially to understanding and cooperation among the African States and have thereby strengthened its role in the areas of peace, disarmament, security and development,

Along the same lines, given the numerous conflicts the OAU Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution will have to face and in light of the illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons, it is important to strengthen the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, headquartered in Togo.

Further requests the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly at its fifty-third session, under the item entitled " Review and implementation of the Concluding Document of the Twelfth Special Session of the General Assembly " , on the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa, and on the implementation of the present resolution.
٧ - تطلب كذلك الى اﻷمين العام أن يقدم الى الجمعية العامة في دورتها الثالثة والخمسين، في إطار البند المعنون " استعراض وتنفيذ وثيقة اختتام دورة الجمعية العامة الثانية عشرة " ، تقريرا عن أنشطة مركز اﻷمم المتحدة اﻹقليمي للسلم ونزع السلاح في افريقيا وعن تنفيذ هذا القرار.

5. Encourages the Secretary-General to continue his efforts in the context of the implementation of resolution 49/75 G to curb the illicit circulation of small arms and to collect such arms in the affected States which so request, with the support of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa and in close cooperation with the Organization of African Unity,

Turning to the draft resolution contained in A/C.1/50/L.24 on the United Nations Regional Centres for Peace and Disarmament in Africa and elsewhere, my delegation was saddened to hear the Secretary-General announce that the three Centres might be closed for lack of funds and that their operations will be directed from New York.
وبالنسبة لمشروع القرار الوارد في الوثيقة A/C.1/50/L.24 المتعلق بمراكــــز اﻷمم المتحدة الاقليمية للسلم ونزع السلاح في افريقيا وفي أماكن أخرى، يحــــزن وفــــد بلدي أن يعلم بتصريح اﻷمين العام عن احتمال إغـــــلاق المراكـز الثلاثة لعدم توفر اﻷموال، وعن النية في إدارة عملياتها مـن نيويورك.

In this regard, I recall the briefing that the Centre for Disarmament Affairs gave the Working Group on related efforts in which it is involved, as a result of a request to the Secretary-General from the President of Mali, and the briefing on the margins of Working Group II on the Bonn International Conversion Centre, where a project involving demobilization and Disarmament in Africa was highlighted.

The Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions has considered the report of the Secretary-General concerning the United Nations regional centres for Peace and Disarmament in Africa and in Asia and the Pacific and the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (A/C.5/47/62).
