It should not be forgotten, however, that such concessions were being made against a background of repression against the League over the past year, and it was particularly disappointing that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had been prevented from participating in a number of the League’s meetings.

'As Special Rapporteur, I welcome the announcement made by Myanmar authorities, on 10 July 1995, to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
' وبصفتي المقرر الخاص، أرحب باﻹعلان الصادر عن سلطات ميانمار، في ١٠ تموز/يوليه ١٩٩٥، باﻹفراج عن السيدة أونغ سان سوكي.

I also believe that the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a very positive and encouraging step towards national reconciliation and democratization in Myanmar.
وأعتقد أيضا أن اﻹفراج عن السيدة أونغ سان سو كي هو خطوة إيجابية ومشجعة للغاية نحو المصالحة الوطنية والتحول الديمقراطي في ميانمار.

According to section 14 of the said law, the restraints on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi were continued year by year for the maximum of five years as stipulated in the law.
ووفقا للمادة ١٤ من القانون المذكور، استمر تحديد إقامة السيدة أونغ سان سو كي عاما بعد عام، حتى استوفي الحد اﻷقصى لﻷعوام الخمسة، المنصوص عليه في القانون.

In my opinion, the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would also be a positive and encouraging step towards national reconciliation and democratization in Myanmar.'

He was grateful to the Government for having facilitated his task in 1994, but expressed disappointment that, in spite of his repeated requests, he had been unable to see Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who had been under house arrest since 20 July 1989.
وقال إنه يشكر الحكومة التي يسرت مهمته في عام ١٩٩٤، ولكنه يأسف لعدم تمكنه، رغم طلباته المتكررة، من مقابلة السيدة أونغ سان سوكي التي هي قيد اﻹقامة الجبريــة فـــي بيتهــا منــذ ٢٠ تموز/يوليه ١٩٨٩.

6. On 19 July 1995, following the lifting of restrictions against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Special Rapporteur addressed the following letter to the Government of Myanmar requesting a visit to the country in order to meet with her:
٦ - في ١٩ تموز/يوليه ١٩٩٥، على أثر رفع القيود المفروضة على السيدة أونغ سان سو كي، وجه المقرر الخاص الرسالة التالية إلى حكومة ميانمار، طالبا زيارة ذلك البلد للاجتماع إليها:

" 16. The Special Rapporteur welcomed with great satisfaction the announcement, made on 10 July 1995, that restrictions on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had been lifted by the Government of Myanmar and that she had been released.
" ١٦ - ويرحب المقرر الخاص مع بالغ الارتياح بما أعلنته حكومة ميانمار في ١٠ تموز/يوليه ١٩٩٥ من رفع القيود التي كانت مفروضة على السيدة أونغ سان سو كي واﻹفراج عنها.

'In keeping with my commitment to endeavour to accord full consideration to your Government's views on the substantive issues raised in my mandate, including both general and specific allegations of human rights violations by the Government of Myanmar, I would appreciate receiving your Government's response with regard to the ongoing detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
' تمشيا مع التزامي بالسعي ﻷن آخذ في الاعتبار تماما آراء حكومتكم بشأن المسائل الجوهرية التي تشملها ولايتي، بما في ذلك الادعاءات العامة والمحددة عن انتهاكات حقوق اﻹنسان من جانب حكومة ميانمار، فإنني أكون ممتنا لو تلقيت رد حكومتكم فيما يتعلق باستمرار احتجاز السيدة أونغ سان سو كي.

'In a note verbale dated 4 November 1994, your Government provided me with a detailed response concerning the specific legal authority for keeping Daw Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest after 20 July 1994.
' وفي مذكرة شفوية مؤرخة ٤ تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر ١٩٩٤، أفادتني حكومتكم برد مفصل بشأن السند القانوني المحدد ﻹبقاء السيدة أونغ سان سو كي قيد اﻹقامة الجبرية بعد ٢٠ تموز/يوليه ١٩٩٤.

In this connection, the Special Rapporteur would like to be informed if Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will be participating in the National Convention which, according to information received, will reconvene on 24 October 1995.
ويود المقرر الخاص في هذا الصدد أن يجري إبلاغه بما إذا كانت السيدة أونغ سان سو كي ستشارك في المؤتمر الوطني الذي سيعود إلى الانعقاد في ٢٤ تشرين اﻷول/أكتوبر ١٩٩٥، وفقا لما ورد من معلومات.

He noted with particular satisfaction the July 1995 lifting of restrictions on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who was now free to meet with supporters and travel within the country.

On 27 May 1994, a Swiss national displayed a banner in front of Yangon City Hall, demanding the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
