12.44 A major thrust of this subprogramme is the promotion of scientific assessments, such as follow-up to the global biodiversity assessment, the second assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the revised World Desertification Atlas, the global freshwater assessment and the land-based activities assessment undertaken by the inter-agency Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Pollution.

At the 8th plenary meeting, on 9 November 2001, acting upon the recommendation of the SBSTA (FCCC/SBSTA/2001/L.17/Add.1), the Conference adopted decision 25/CP7, entitled " Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change " (see FCCC/CP/2001/13/Add.4, section III).
